Fatal jib drop in Singapore

Two men were injured and one died when a crawler crane’s luffing jib came down onto the roof of a building in Singapore yesterday.

The man who died was trapped under the jib and declared dead at the scene, he was 42, another suffered a fractured thigh bone and the third a spinal injury. All three men were construction workers from China.

We have very little information on what caused the incident, apart from what we can ascertain from the photos that we have been sent. It seems to suggest a hoist or cable failure.

Singapore has a first class record of investigating and publishing infromation from such accidents, so any lessons should be available in due course.
