Crane runs away in UK

A crane operator died today after his 500 tonne crane ran away on a steep incline at the Scout Moor wind farm at Edenfield quarry, Rossendale, north of Bury in the UK.

Reports from the scene confirm that the crane is a 500 tonne All Terrain owned by UK rental company Baldwins. They say that the crane appeared to gather speed as it descended the hill from a turbine location and ran off the road into an earth bank.

The Health & Safety Executive has sent two inspectors to site and is investigating. The operator was declared dead at the scene.

I didn't know the driver, but i think i can speak for everyone else by saying rest in peace my friend. Im sure you contribution as an operator in this dangerous industry was nothing but truly professional, Skilled and selfless. You have left a big hole in the hearts of all operators. Time for reflection.
I ask all operators & supervisors, and Managers to exercise vigilance, caution when driving cranes, and operating cranes. Keep on top of your F91. Report all defects. But i don't need to tell you this. Thank you. Lets Get To Work!!

Just a few words for the so called friend of Lindsey, John Spillings should show a bit more respect regarding his comments about other people who are angry and upset by this very sad loss.
[[Sentence cut due to the fact that the comment ignored editors request to drop the abuse and finger pointing]]
Lindsey's name will live on for ever.

Yet another great loss in the construction industry. I worked with Lindsey for many years at crane services along with many other good workmates. Lindsey was always good for a laugh, his sense of humour was second to none.

My thoughts and deepest sympathy are with this partner Carol and all the rest of his family.

Lindsey mate . .. rest in peace!

As brother in law to carol murrell, Lindseys partner for the last 15 months.
I firstly would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support they have given at this time of need.
But I also feel the record needs setting straight
Lindsey did make a phone call 4 minutes prior to the accident stating the vechile was having problems, that was the last time anyone ever spoke to him .

Our heart felt feelings go to carol and family
RIP Lindsey you will be missed

Enough!
Please lets have some respect here for the tragic passing of a much respected man rather than bickering... there will always be plenty of time for that.

None of us knows what happened in those last few minutes of this mans life, it could have been anything from brakes to a heart attack.. let's just hope that the Health & Safety Executive or the police inform the poor mans family soon so at least they know for certain.

If it is anything related to the crane then hopefully the information will be made available to others so that lessons might be learnt.

Thank you for your understanding
Editor

Please look at my comments on the later page regarding my good friend Lindsay, As i have said i am talking to Lindsays family on a daily basis, and assisting in every way i can personally. As for Dave the crane and his little band of followers can you please stop all the unnecessary banter. The family are grieving i know.I know there is freedom of speech but his true friends have not mentioned anything such as you have repeatedly done.Stop now and lets put the man to rest then do your worst. so in the mean time S T F up

Once again, my sincere condolencies to the operator's family. In reply to the petty and inaccurate post by Mr. Whitley, my comments were neither thoughtless, nor were they tactless. 1). I expressed my sorrow for the death of the operator. 2). I stated a fact that the last article I read on Vertikal.net regarding a Baldwin's crane concerned brake failure and a death. 3). I asked whether or not this was a coincidence. I have no wish to speak to anyone, at any Leeds depot, about anything, thank you very much Sir. To Mr. Wortley, the coincidences in the 2 tragic accidents are blatantly obvious, I am afraid, to anyone but a fool. 1). Accident resulting in a tragic death. 2). Baldwins crane involved. 3). Travelling down a steep incline. Once again, my heart goes out to the operator's family.

Ps dave the crane please be careful with your comments as there are no confirmed reports that the brakes have failed so theres probably no coindence between this accident and the last one.
