Five new Hiabs for ThyssenKrupp Palmers

UK Based Scaffolder, ThyssenKrupp Palmers has purchased five new Hiab XS 144B loader cranes from Cargotec.

The cranes, three of which have already been delivered, were acquired following a competitive tendering process, which Cargotec-Hiab won. They are rear mounted on three axle DAF 75.360 trucks and include full radio remote controls.

“Our previous experience of HIAB was very good – their machines have been extremely reliable, back-up service has been second-to-none, and in addition to all that, Cargotec Hiab came in with a very competitive package,” said
ThyssenKrupp Palmers’ fleet manager, Adrian Lambert.

“One of the deciding factors was the fact that the XS 144B could be specified with an 8.2-metre reach. As most of our flat-bed trucks have a bed length of eight metres, this was absolutely ideal for what we needed. Historically, we had used cable lifts for deliveries, as is common across the scaffold industry. However we needed the flexibility of being able to deliver into multiple areas on site rather than just delivering one bed.”

“Although all our crane operators are CPCS trained, Hiab stipulated that familiarisation training on the equipment should take place, and they provided a half-day’s training for all operators as part of the deal. Delivery of the first three machines was made on time and all went smoothly and according to plan.”

Palmers was founded 120 years ago and was acquired by ThyssenKrupp in 1999. Today the company has an 800-strong UK workforce and supplies scaffolding and other access systems to the construction, rail, air and transport industries. Projects include recent high-profile contracts such as Heathrow Terminal 5, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Forth Bridge and Paddington Station.
