China shipyard booms from Genie

Genie has introduced two straight boom lifts, the100ft (30.5m) S-3200 and 120ft (36.5m) S-3800, based on its existing S100 and S120 boom lifts, but aimed directly at the Asian shipbuilding market.

The new booms will be manufactured exclusively at the new Terex Aerial Work Platforms plant in Changzhou, China.

In order to cope with the harsh conditions of shipyard applications, which include salt water and blasting, the new models include a complete hostile environment kit as standard, including cylinder bellows, boom wiper seals, turntable shield, ring gear guard and air pre-cleaner. All intended to reduce the
damage caused by weld slag and debris.

The platforms on the new lifts include high-strength steel tubing, pinch rails, padded bumpers, steel mesh, a new heavy-duty foot switch and a steel platform rotator shield. The control boxes feature joystick guards a sealed extra tough control box cover and an angled lid to prevent the accumulation of debris.

An enclosed cable and hose power track with heavy steel covers, is mounted on top of the boom to help prevent impact damage, while all exterior hoses and cables are fitted with fire-resistant sleeves.

The usual composite superstructure covers have been replaced with steel ones and have large removable service doors for easy access to the main compartments. They also have integral bump rails and lockable control panel doors that can be easily removed for full engine access.

The lifts also feature solid tires which are said to offer better performance in shipyard applications and particular attention has been paid to the lifting points to make it easier to crane the machines into dry docks etc…

Power comes from a choice of Deutz or Cummins diesels and the units are built to fully conform to EN280 so can be CE marked.

Senior product manager Frank Schneider said: “Salt air, heavy oxidation, weld slag, cutting debris and constant usage make the shipyard one of the harshest environments for a boom lift. These booms were designed specifically to address those demands and the result is a product that offers superior performance in this type of application. “

XS Koo, managing director Asia Pacific added: “Our new booms are just the beginning of our strategy to reach out to the Asian marketplace with engineered products to meet our customers’ unique needs. The quality of our products, coupled with our superior customer service and focus on safety, will help to grow the strength of the Genie brand in this region. We look forward to showing our customers the Changzhou factory.”
