HSE awareness day

UK based training company OMS has recently run a Work at Height awareness day for Health & Safety Executive inspectors and representatives, following the opening of its new training centre in Bardon Hill, near Coalville, Leicestershire.
The day included practical demonstrations in the safe building of access towers (PASMA), use of aerial lifts (IPAF) and ladders.
Falls from height result in over 4,000 major injuries every year in UK workplaces alone, according to the HSE, and indeed falling from a height remains the biggest killer on construction sites.
As a result the HSE is stepping up on the spot visits from inspectors, with a particular focus on evidence of competence and adequate training in working at height.
Commenting on the training, HM principal inspector of Health and Safety, Richard Lockwood, said: “OMS’ awareness day provided us all with extremely useful information on the latest developments in safe work at height practices, such as the new advanced guardrail system and the latest classifications for machinery, all of which will help us in educating and communicating with local businesses.”
