True All Terrain crane work

Munich based crane hire company, Schmidbauer was recently called on for their expertise on a special job. The task was to erect 20 electric pylons over an 18 km route, parallel to the existing power line and then disassemble the old masts.
The contract period to complete all of the work was fixed at four weeks.

The major challenge was the marshy ground of the South German location. A track for site maintenance vehicles could not be used for the crane work, as it ran directly underneath the existing power line.

A crane was required with superior rough terrain capability, with a relatively low GVW and lifting capacities of between five and si 6.5 tonnes at 16 to 18metres radius and a height of between 25 and 35 metres.

Having considered the application Schmidbauer selected the Tadano-Faun ATF 80-4 in its "Taxi crane" format with six tonnes of counterweight, giving it between 6.4 and 6.9 tonnes lift capacity on a 41metre boom at the necessary radii.
.
It was also clear that due to very poor ground conditions complicated by heavy snow, the ATF 80-4 needed extra flotation capability. Within two days the crane was fitted with an off the shelf twin tyre system, made by the Swiss company, Schaad.

The system was modified by the Schmidbauer Team and installed on the crane.

The redesign by the Schmidbauer specialists also included a way to install the extra tyre system with only one man in one hour as it had to be fitted after the crane left the highway.

The job was completed on time with complete customer satisfaction.
